Improve nature around golf courses for more bird(ie)s

Summary

Which birds occur around Danish and Scandinavian golf courses and how do we improve their living conditions through involving golfers and birdwatchers? A close collaboration between DOF BirdLife, DGU and the other Scandinavian golf associations is forged to investigate this, and their respective thousands of volunteers and members are spearheading implementation of the activities around the golf clubs.

The main activities are bird monitoring, producing a ready-to-use guide with bird friendly management initiatives targeting greenkeepers, networking between golfers and birdwatchers through guided birdwatching trips, presentations and setting up nest boxes. The effect of these initiatives will be monitored by DOF BirdLife.

Project objectives

  1. Gather sufficient data to find out what bird species, and how many, are found on the Danish and Southern Swedish golf courses with a focus on the species that are breeding and feeding there.

  2. Improving the living conditions for birds and the overall nature value on and around golf courses without compromising the main aim of playing golf in the areas.

  3. Inspiring golfers in the Nordic countries to show more interest in birds and nature, and for birdwatchers in the same countries to be more aware of golf courses having the potential to be a new arena for birdwatching, resulting in a closer collaboration and more overlapping interests between these two groups of stakeholders.
